The thoroughly revised and updated 18th Edition is packed together with necessary information on diagnosing and treating medical disorders to help medical professionals bring the excellent care to their patients.

This handy, compact guide was written by a team of clinicians for usual use. Intended for maximum clinical utility, the new Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy makes it simple to locate the right information, right when it is necessary. It is a must-have for medical students, residents, practicing physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals.

Featuring:

  • All new "approach" chapters
  • All-new abstract summaries
  • 341 total chapters
  • 34 fully new chapters
  • 69 new illustrations
  • New cross-referencing
  • Two-color presentation
  • Brand new content on: critical care medicine, metabolic syndrome, acute lung injury, biological warfare and terrorism, SARS, smallpox, and extra
This is serious stuff. The much widely used medical topic in the world and the hypochondriac's bible, the Merck has the lowdown on the vast expanse of human diseases, disorders and injuries, as well as their symptoms and recommended therapy. It's designed for physicians and medical students, but though the type is tiny and the language technical, the Merck's a valuable volume for anyone together with extra than a passing interest in bodily ills.

As a nurse for ages, this book never disappoints. Great reference for those with medical background. Too medical for most laypersons.
Customer rating is 1 of 5  Inaccurate on ME/CFIDS   2010-05-28
By Justin Reilly (Lafayette, CO)
Generally this is a very good reference, but because the info on my disease ME/CFIDS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/ Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome) is a zero star I am going to rate this one star.

I understand that the ME/CFIDS section is only one section of many, but the amount of iatrogenic morbidity caused by this sort of eggregious misinformation on ME is so tremendous, I think it is appropriate to speak out strongly against it with a one-star review. Editors- please make the section accurate by consulting the 2003 ME/CFS Canadian Consensus Criteria (and me if you need more info) and I will of course rate it five stars.

ME is an extremely debilitating neuro-endocrine immune & mitochondrial disease strongly associated with two retroviruses and otherwise extraordinarily rare lymphomas. There is a bit of accurate info here, but mostly very misleading or incorrect such as that there is only 'mild cognitive dysfunction' and 'some, many or even all cases may be psychogenic.' See the ME/CFS Canadian Consensus Criteria for accurate info.

The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, 18th Edition

I've kept a Merck Manual around for years for reference. Excellent way to save a trip to the doc's office on occasion and sometimes answer the questions you didn't ask when you were there.

In the world of information overload, where there are no longer any "Renaissaince Men," this is as close as you will get to "everything a general practitioner will even need to know" in one volume. This has a variety of conditions, described in a decent amount of detail, in a compact format. I am a nursing student and am using this manual to review various conditions for the NCLEX: Although this manual is written for physicians by physicians, much of the information is valuable to nurses as well, since we are often expected to know information that only physicians were expected to know a few generations ago. I don't like breaking out huge tomes (like Med-Surg textbooks) to read from, but this is an easy to carry, easy to hold in the hand and read volume. It contains information on almost any condition imaginable, except for the most esoteric and rare conditions known only to specialists.

The only thing lacking in this manual, that I would like to see, is an index of laboratory tests and common lab values. Also, illustrations are pretty much absent, so if you are a visual person, you will want to have an illustrated medical dictionary as an adjunct to this.
